Since its debut in 1994, the MetroCard has been more than a way to get around New York. With its compact size, bold graphic design, and citywide circulation, the fare card quickly became an unexpected canvas.

Opening March 16 at the New York Transit Museum’s Grand Central Gallery & Store, Inspired by MetroCard explores how this everyday transit object evolved into a powerful artistic medium and source of inspiration for artists, designers, and cultural institutions over three decades.
Inspired by MetroCard is on view through October 2026. The New York Transit Museum’s Grand Central Gallery & Store is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 6pm; and is closed on major holidays. The Gallery is located in the shuttle passage on 42nd Street and Park Avenue, adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.
