New York Transit Museum Holiday Train Show

  • New York Transit Museum Grand Central Gallery and Store (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This holiday season, the New York Transit Museum’s Grand Central Gallery & Store presents the Holiday Train Show, a cherished tradition that captures the magic of miniature trains and New York City during the holidays.

Lionel model trains, including Metro-North, the whimsical Polar Express, and vintage subway sets, travel a 34-foot, two-level “O” gauge layout that begins at a miniature Grand Central Terminal and winds past New York landmarks on the way to the North Pole. To mark the 40th anniversary of MTA Arts & Design, the 2025 display features work by artists James Yang and Erin K. Robinson, whose bold illustrations bring a fresh creative spark to this beloved holiday tradition.

The Holiday Train Show is free and open to the public, and on view through February 2026. The New York Transit Museum Gallery & Store at Grand Central is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 6pm; and is closed on major holidays. The Gallery is located in the shuttle passage on 42nd Street and Park Avenue, adjacent to the Station Master’s Office.

More about Common Pantry: For 45 years, New York Common Pantry (NYCP) has been a trusted source of support for New Yorkers facing food insecurity.

With 1 in 4 New Yorkers facing poverty, NYCP steps in where public programs fall short, ensuring New Yorkers can continue to access healthy foods, hygiene services, nutrition education, and other necessary resources.

Their holistic approach addresses not only participants’ immediate need for food but also confronts the underlying causes of food insecurity through our interconnected programs – food pantry (Choice Pantry) and meal distribution programs (Hot Meals), homeless visitor services (Project Dignity), case management focused on resource acquisition (Help 365), and nutrition education (Live Healthy!).

Tap into interwoven legacies of liberation from across the African diaspora with dynamic programming spanning music and magic to art-making, poetry, and beyond.

Free; registration  is required and includes Museum general admission. Tickets will be released on a rolling basis starting January 16 for Members and January 20 for the public. Sign up for the Brooklyn Museum newsletter  to be notified of the next release.

Kids Day:

Run, Walk, Crawl—Just Move! 11:45am, 1:30 & 3pm

Inspired by Dr. King’s words, “If you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl; but by all means keep moving,” this activity invites everyone to take part in the journey, in whatever way they can. Whether you run, walk, crawl, or simply pause to breathe, each movement is a way of contributing, staying connected, and being part of something bigger. Every step matters, and together we keep hope and resilience alive. This activity is led by Adia Whitaker and Jashua Sa-Ra.

Dear Future Me 11:45am, 1:30 & 3pm

Dr. King often spoke about holding onto faith even when the road ahead was uncertain. He reminded us that “faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Inspired by that spirit, Dear Future Me invites participants of all ages to pause, reflect, and write a message to their future selves—a reminder of strength, hope, and resilience.

Each letter is a seed of encouragement planted for the person you are still becoming. Whether you’re a child drawing what makes you smile, a teen reflecting on courage, or an adult acknowledging your growth, your words are a promise to keep moving forward—just as Dr. King urged us to do. This activity is led by Vibhuti Arya Armifar.

Dr. MLK Jr. Bingo 11:45am, 1:30 & 3pm

Led by Jashua Sa-Ra and David C. Brown, this bingo-inspired activity encourages players of all ages to work together while exploring the history, values, and visionary life of Dr. King.

CommUNITY Tape Mural: Garden of Joy ONGOING THROUGHOUT EACH SESSION

Add your color to the Garden of Joy! Inspired by Dr. King’s vision of unity and resilience, families and children are invited to build this community mural together—one piece of tape at a time. Each color represents infinite hope and the strength we grow when we stand together. Designed and led by Kyung Jeon-Miranda.
